About Maboneng

Maboneng lives up to its name. It means “place of light” in Sotho, and this area of Johannesburg has indeed been transformed into an energetic precinct which has a bright future. The region is being developed by Propertuity, and great focus has been placed on promoting creativity, transformation and collaboration. It is a multi-cultural hub that features graffiti walls, art galleries, markets, designer shops, restaurants, residential buildings and businesses.

Regardless of the time of year, this remains an exciting destination. Johannesburg’s mild climate, including refreshing summertime thundershowers and sunny winters, encourages tourism and no doubt adds to Maboneng Precinct’s magnetism.

Explore Johannesburg, South Africa

My wife and I started our 15th wedding anniversary trip to Africa in Johannesburg and we knew that we wanted to stay in the hip precinct of Maboneng. I chose Hallmark House really based on a feeling (and the interesting history of the building) and it turned out to a fantastic choice. From arrival to departure every detail we expected was done perfectly, and a whole lot of things we didn't expect. As one example, the hotel knew it was our anniversary so upon return from dinner we found our room decked out with beautiful towel sculptures, rose petals and scented candles. The breakfast team, people on the front desk, doormen, drivers and housekeeping services were completely spot on. The room was really spacious, with a huge bathroom, and a terrific balcony with swinging chairs. The coffee shop in the lobby (Loof) makes great coffee and the bar is a great spot to watch the world go by. Also visit the Pot Luck Club in the basement for a speakeasy experience in Jo'burg. I would absolutely recommend anyone going to Jo'burg to visit Maboneng, and to stay at Hallmark House is the way to do it in style.

I had an overnight stay at Hallmark House in Jo'burg and immediately wished for more time there. The hotel is an art gallery with impeccable design that can't be beat. It also showcased friendly staff who are eager to share their hotel and neighborhood's vision for development and its positive impact for their community. The hotel is in a downtown area, but guests should feel 100% safe and well looked after by the hotel staff. Go out using their shuttle service or enjoy the city view from your balcony and order delicious room service for a cozy night in!

Place was fantastic! Room was big, very clean and bathroom was also a very size with shower and a tub. People were very kind and polite. Breakfast was filled with hearty and healthy items. And shuttle bus to Maboneng was very nice touch (Last one leaves from Maboneng at 6:30PM), wish shuttle runs to till late. Just call Uber if you missed the last one, cost me only R21. I had great stay! Thanks hotel!

The Hallmark House building underwent a massive refurbishment in 2016 under the expert guidance of Propertuity and world-famous architect, Sir David Adjaye of Adjaye Associates. The hotel comprises 46 rooms, each with views of the bustling city, and has been decorated with art installations and brightly printed African textiles. Rooms are equally enlivening as each displays bold colours, patterns and modern finishes.
