The Onyx Hotel in Cape Town turns 5 & what a journey it’s been

In conjunction with Newmark Hotels & Reserves, The Onyx Hotel is celebrating our fifth birthday by thanking all the guests and staff who have stayed with us or dined with us over the past five incredible years.
Named after the elegant onyx gemstone, which resembles a black sapphire and is known to have properties of healing and stability, we are proud of The Onyx Hotel’s success as a prime hospitality destination in Cape Town’s Foreshore area. It was also the first apartment hotel in the Newmark Hotels & Reserves portfolio
Half a decade of success & here’s to several more!
While five years may seem like a short time compared to Cape Town’s more established hotels such as the Victoria & Alfred Hotel, our journey is impressive, considering that The Onyx Hotel opened its doors in 2018, just before COVID-19, and is still going strong. At a time when tourism took an unexpected hit and businesses around the country closed, we are honoured to have been able to continue thriving and serving our guests.
“We ran just over a year before the pandemic hit us. Being an apart-hotel we were able to keep things going as the guests could be isolated in their rooms and provide for themselves with the fully fitted kitchens in the units. Coming out of the pandemic, we gradually saw the corporate travellers returning bit by bit, but it was only really in May 2022 that we saw a big international influx of business with the first Mining Indaba since 2019,” said General Manager, Theunie Marais.
Clear skies and a chance to shine
From that point, the international market began to return as restrictions were lifted slowly but surely. Being so centrally located in the CBD and so close to the V&A waterfront, The Onyx Hotel witnessed firsthand a post-pandemic reawakening as people from around the globe who had not been able to travel for many years started to venture out. With fully functional units and strict protocols in place, guests found a safe space to call home while visiting Cape Town.
“We have many returning guests and by this time, most of the dedicated Onyx team members knew the guests by name, plus we offered fully serviced apartments on a daily basis with all the facilities and services offered. One of the big challenges after the pandemic was also the shortage of hospitality professionals, as a lot of people had left the industry during the pandemic to make ends meet. We were very lucky to have many of our dedicated team members return and many of them are still with us to date. We took the time to invest, train and promote internally and focus on the team dedicated to getting The Onyx back on track,” added Marais.
