An inviting restaurant with a warm glow set in Cape Town’s Foreshore, YU is the city’s answer to exceptional Asian dining. Expect all your Japanese favourites and even a few pleasant, contemporary surprises.
The menu at a glance
Run by restauranteur Rory Jossel, the philosophy at YU is to push the boundaries of Japanese cuisine with the restaurant's own take on Izakaya dishes.
Starters at YU, fashionably known as ‘nibbles’, include spicy edamame, chicken wings, soft shell crab, the classic Asian spring roll, and sticky ribs marinated in Sichuan pepper, honey and miso. Dip into Dim Sum dishes, such as seafood, chicken, spicy mushroom or duck dumpling servings. There’s also miso soup, poke bowls, boas and crispy rice options to choose from.
Feast on main dishes such as linefish, Indonesian stir fry, Korean lamb chops, and salmon Teriyaki, with a dash of interesting sides like grilled cauliflower heads with green curry. You also have the opportunity to try a variety of signature or classic sushi dishes.
Come for the food, stay for the experience!
If you’re not at the sushi bar, there’s still plenty to enjoy at YU, where warm, velvety colours and authentic design features dominate, like the mesmerising octopus wall mural, setting the scene for something truly extraordinary.
Apart from the delectable menu offerings, the general vibe is one of friendliness, warmth, and an all-round feel-good mood that will make it quite hard to leave. Bring some friends over for a drink after work or chat over our poke bowls and starters before tucking into your main dish.
Located on the ground floor of The Onyx Hotel in The Foreshore makes YU easily accessible from anywhere in Cape Town. You’re more than welcome to stay over at the glamorous apartment-style hotel, for an extended luxury experience with premium hospitality by Newmark Hotels & Reserves.
