Sustainability Efforts at The Onyx Hotel

While tourism can have a negative environmental and social impact, The Onyx Hotel is committed to conservation by putting sustainable, ethical practices in place wherever possible.

Community initiatives at The Onyx Hotel

In line with our dedication to the community, 90% of staff hired by The Onyx Hotel are local. The hotel gives back to local NGOs by donating linen that can no longer be used in the hotel. The Onyx Hotel also supports Khayelitsha Cookies, a local company that creates working opportunities for unemployed locals.

“I like to create an environment for the team to grow and develop and train team members from within when they have the right attitude and drive. Some come from housekeeping and are currently in reception or even duty manager positions,” said the general manager of The Onyx Hotel.

In this spirit of community upliftment, the Onyx team is passionate about supporting locals and uses local wine for room gifting. Additional room treats are always locally sourced as well.

Water Wise Operations

With water being one of our scarcest natural resources, The Onyx Hotel uses water saver shower heads in all the rooms. Luxury bathtubs only feature in two of the bedroom units. Additionally, hotel linen is changed every two to three days instead of daily, as the staff commits to water-saving efforts.

Energy Efficiency

The Onyx Hotel boasts an elegant indoor/outdoor pool; however, the pool heating system is linked to the HVAC system, so it doesn’t require its own energy source for heating.

Guests feel at home with the beautiful mood lighting used throughout the hotel, creating a welcoming ambiance. The good news is that these light displays are all energy-saving LED lights. The Onyx Hotel also uses solar panels and motion sensors to ensure minimal energy consumption.

Recycling Initiatives

As a hotel on par with some of the world's biggest and most glamorous, The Onyx Hotel is serious about the impact it makes. A dedicated staff member onsite sorts out all the recycling daily. The body corporate then sends it to a company called Dynamic, which manages the hotel’s recycling accordingly.

Paper and Plastic Reduction

In line with efforts to embrace paperless operations, The Onyx Hotel uses wooden QR blocks in the rooms to reduce the printing of brochures and hotel information. Guests can also expect paper straws in the restaurants, Yu, MRKT and Granite Bar.
