Sustainability at The Queen Victoria Hotel

The Queen Victoria Hotel by Newmark, located the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, has committed to regularly taking stock of the impact it has on its environment and surrounding community. In order to mitigate the negative economic, environmental and social impact of tourism and instead make a positive contribution to local communities, cultural heritage and conservation wherever possible, The Queen Victoria Hotel has introduced the following initiatives:
Veggie-box-to-cocktail-glass mixology
At the Queen Victoria Hotel, we are particularly proud of our vegetable boxes and edible flowers that we grow in our manicured and well-maintained gardens on the property. This wholesome, fresh produce is used in our kitchens and in our cocktails, which we make from scratch in the bar at Dash Restaurant.
Reducing waste
We also employ a policy that aims for zero kitchen wastage. We monitor hotel occupancy and restaurant bookings to ensure that we order just the right amount of food ingredients.
Moving away from bottled products
All our sauces and marinades are made with care from scratch using sustainably sourced local ingredients.
Sustainable fish
Dash Restaurant has a reputation as one of Cape Town’s top fine dining restaurants. Located close to the harbour in Cape Town, fish makes a regular appearance on our menu but when it does we make sure that all of the fish we source is on SASSI’s grand appearance on our menu, so we make sure to serve only the most sustainable fish from the SASSI’s (South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative) green list of fish that are in plentiful supply in the water’s surrounding Cape Town.
The South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative is a guide to making responsible seafood choices. It helps us at the Queen Victoria Hotel to ensure that our seafood dishes not only taste superb but are also environmentally friendly.
Employing locals
Sustainability means supporting local, which is why we make a genuine effort to employ local staff whenever possible and are proud to have a staff complement of around 80% South Africans.
Partnering with local tourism businesses
Our sister tour operator company, Marvel Tours, also makes an effort to employ a significant number of local guides.
Energy saving
All of the lightbulbs in The Queen Victoria Hotel have been replaced with energy saving bulbs.
Plastic reduction
We are also making steady strides towards reducing plastic by eliminating the use of plastic bottles for water. All our rooms will soon be stocked with glass bottles, adding to our consciously elegant appeal.
Central location
Being situated in such a prime location at the V&A Waterfront means that guests don’t have to worry about the hassle of a hire car when they stay with us. Many of Cape Town’s top attractions are within easy walking distance from The Queen Victoria Hotel. We also encourage guests to hire bicycles from the rental station across the road at The V&A Waterfront as a carbon-neutral transportation option.
