Women’s Month is a significant time to honour the achievements of female leaders and team members, particularly in the hospitality industry, which has traditionally been male dominated.
Today, we shine the spotlight on Walda Lloyd, General Manager at the iconic Winchester Hotel in Sea Point. We discuss what inspired Walda to join the hospitality industry, cover her career path, and speak to her about the benefits of employing female leaders. Q: Can you share a summary of your career path and successes in the hospitality industry?
A: My journey began at the International Hotel School in Durban and at the historic Royal Hotel. I then launched into bedroom stewardessing on the QEII Cruise liner.
In 2005, I joined the Three Cities group, eventually becoming the General Manager at Plettenberg Park Boutique Hotel & Spa in 2008.
Over the past 15 years, I've launched three hotels in Cape Town, gaining insights into the specialist needs of corporate travellers. My diverse experiences have deepened my understanding of the hospitality landscape.
Q: What inspired you to join the hospitality industry?
A: My passion for hospitality was cultivated in a family that cherished welcoming guests. This tradition of hosting with warmth and care inspired me to pursue a career where I could create truly memorable experiences for others.
Q: What are the advantages of hiring a female GM at a hotel?
A: Female leaders bring meticulous attention to detail, a nurturing approach to staff development and compassionate empathy. These qualities enable them to navigate complex situations and build strong relationships, enhancing the overall team dynamic and guest experience.
Q: What recommendations would you give to junior female hospitality employees on breaking through industry ceilings?
A: Embrace your individuality and avoid conforming to traditional leadership norms. Your unique strengths and emotional intelligence are assets. Don’t hesitate to express your emotions; they are crucial for building authentic connections and fostering empathy.
Q: What can hospitality businesses do to empower more female employees and assist them in reaching their full potential in the industry?
A: Businesses should provide mentorship programs, training and flexible work arrangements to help women balance work and family responsibilities. Fostering an inclusive culture, offering leadership opportunities and facilitating networking connections are also key. Recognising and rewarding achievements, supporting well-being and addressing biases are essential for creating a respectful work environment and promoting gender equality in the industry.
