The Onyx Hotel Showcases African Futuristic Art

Mfaku takes bold strides in reimagining Africa, and the results are out of this world. His latest exhibition is called ISINTU Season 2 and was recently launched at The Onyx Hotel by Newmark Hotels & Reserves.

Seeing Africa Through a New Lens
Viwe Mfaku, originally from the Eastern Cape and now living in Foreshore, showed signs of artistic talent from as early as Grade 3. He says his parents were both collectors of beautiful things, and he was surrounded by art at home. 

After honing his art, he worked as a visual artist in the corporate world and eventually launched his own art exhibition series, entitled ISINTU Season 1 & ISINTU Season 2. Season 2, which was warmly welcomed at The Onyx Hotel, aims to connect Africa to the wider digital world. 

Mfaku’s paintings depict captivating images of African-looking robots with knobkerries, women’s traditional headdresses, space helmets and others of a similar theme. It presents Africa in a way we’ve never seen before, but perhaps a way that needs to be seen to reimagine the continent as a world-class contender on the global stage.

“I hope people can be inspired to hold higher standards of everything that comes out of the continent. I just want us to be the best versions without losing an appreciation of ourselves,” he said in an interview with Shelflife magazine.
