Sizzle and Savour! It’s a Zanzibar Fish Braai Experience

Posted on: 23 July 2024 Written by: Newmark Hotels & Reserves

A sensory seafood dining experience awaits at Chuini Zanzibar Beach Lodge. Situated on the oceanfront, it’s only fitting that guests at this premium hotel are treated to the freshest seafood, locally caught and prepared by expert chefs, while they spectate at the restaurant’s coal braai.

An island-stye fish braai

Seafood is popular in Swahili culture, and when combined with the exotic spices of Zanzibar, you can expect mouthwatering ocean-caught cuisine at Chuini Zanzibar Lodge by Newmark Hotels & Reserves. In this authentic seafood dining experience, guests can enjoy a variety of locally caught, fresh seafood.

The fish braai begins with the chef carefully choosing a wide selection of six different fresh fish and crustaceans laid out on an ice table. As a guest, you are handed a wooden board and given the opportunity to select your choice of fish.

The next chef stationed at the restaurant’s coal fire braai cooks your selection of fish directly in front of you in a fascinating show of skill. Your fish is then plated and served with a selection of authentic Zanzibar side dishes, ready to be devoured!

STARTer: Zanzibar Fish Soup

This soup is made with sautéed celery, leeks, onion, tomatoes, chilies, and cubes of succulent, firm white fish (red snapper) added to a delicious coconut milk soup flavoured with the exotic spices from Zanzibar.

Main Course: Seafood Speciality

The main course is an exciting combination of cigal (slipper lobster), prawns, calamari, octopus, red snapper, and tuna—served with garlic and lemon butter rice, salad, and veggies or chips.

Dessert: Kashata & Kilimanjaro Ice-Cream

Satisfy your sweet tooth with a dessert of kashata—a cross between candy and cookies—which is a popular snack in East Africa. Kashata is usually made with peanuts or grated coconut, sometimes both. Its cooked on a stove or open fire—no oven is needed. This is served with Kilimanjaro ice-cream, which is locally produced in Tanzania.

Chuini Zanzibar Beach Lodge is set on ancient palace ruins in a private fishing village of the Unguja island of Zanzibar, offering 5-star luxurious accommodation.
