Strolling along the water’s edge at The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in time to the beat of the marimba bands while seals frolic in the harbour, its easy to understand why this destination, with its incredible panoramic views of Table Mountain, is South Africa’s most visited attraction.
Here, in the heart of it all, in a picturesque spot overlooking the harbour and mountains, The Victoria & Alfred Hotel by Newmark Hotels & Reserves commands what is arguably the country’s prime accommodation position.
Originally the North Quay Warehouse, the 1904 building that now houses the Victoria & Alfred Hotel was converted in the early 90s when the Waterfront was first developed. It was the very first hotel to open at the waterfront and care was taken to maintain the building’s original character and heritage. Above average in size, hotel rooms were built to fit within the original storage container compartments. The original steel framework can also be seen when exploring the building.
Three decades later The Vicotria & Alfre Hotel has undergone an extensive renovation, recently reopening its popular Mountain and Piazza Rooms. These have been refurbished in a minimalistic and modern style featuring neutral tones that draw the eye towards the large windows and magnificent views beyond. During the renovation, a lot of attention was paid to upgrading technology and connectivity to meet the needs of the modern traveller. The Wi-Fi has been updated, Smart TVs have been installed and plug and USB points are dotted around the rooms in intuitively convenient places.
The renovated lobby now flows directly into the revamped Alfred Mall which displays some of South Africa’s most upmarket fashion and accessory brands. Stairs lead from the hotel’s foyer directly into GINJA Restaurant. This airy eatery opens onto a terrace of tables perched directly on the water’s edge. Led by Chef Terrence Ford, GINJA offers an extensive menu of fresh seafood and South African grills. Their Sunday Brunch, which boasts harvest tables laden with tasty platters, is a particular treat for those that are spoiling themselves with a weekend stay in Cape Town.
