Newmark Hotels & Reserves gives back on Mandela Day

Mandela Day is a powerful reminder to contribute to our communities, embodying the spirit of Madiba’s legacy. It is celebrated globally every year on July 18th, the birthday of South Africa’s late former president, Nelson Mandela. The idea is to spend 67 minutes of community service in honour of Mandela's service to his country.  This year, Newmark Hotels & Reserves was honoured to be part of two very meaningful activities.

Artists Come Together to Honour Madiba
This year, Newmark Hotels & Reserves partnered with four local South African artists who volunteered their brushes to create a portrait of Nelson Mandela in 67 minutes. The artworks were then displayed on cards at various properties in the Newmark Hotels & Reserves Group, featuring a QR code for guests to donate to local charities in celebration of Mandela Day. 

The finished portraits were stunning, inspirational pieces that captured the humanity of our former president on paper. Artists included Jess Meyer, Jacques Mollentze, Candice Christie and Hanli van der Spuy.

With a diverse range of talent from watercolourists to design specialists, each artist brought their unique creativity to this worthy cause supported by Newmark Hotels & Reserves.

Fighting Hunger with Nutrition
Newmark Hotels & Reserves HQ teams also joined SA Harvest to pack #BucketsofNutrition, providing essential food items for families in need. SA Harvest is a South African food rescue organisation fighting hunger one bucket at a time. Each bucket is worth R500 of non-perishable items and feeds a family of four, helping to combat hunger and malnutrition in the communities of Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.

The Newmark Hotels & Reserves team got busy packing buckets and signing labels, geared in their #BucketsofNutrition t-shirts, all in the spirit of Mandela Day. It was an inspiring day of giving back and supporting those who need it most. In the words of Nelson Mandela, “In overcoming poverty and hunger, we are not only assisting individuals but affirming our own humanity.”
