Q&A With Debbie Oliver
Q: Can you share a summary of your career path and successes in the hospitality industry?
A: Growing up in the Kruger National Park sparked my passion for the bush from a young age. My hospitality journey began in England, where I worked at the Black Swan Hotel in Helmsley, Peebles Hotel in Scotland, and Lindeth Fell Country House in the Lake District.
These experiences laid a strong foundation for my career. I spent 19 exciting years as a guide, meeting incredible guests from around the world. This inspired me to pursue a more challenging role, leading me to my current position as General Manager at Nkomazi Private Game Reserve.
Q: What inspired you to join the hospitality industry?
A: My role as a guide allowed me to meet fascinating guests and provided a deep connection to the hospitality industry. It showed me the massive impact that behind-the-scenes attention to detail delivered. After six years in the USA, I sought a more challenging role that would allow me to grow further. The opportunity to become a General Manager at Nkomazi was the perfect fit, offering both personal and professional growth.
Q: What are the advantages of hiring a female GM/Estate Manager at a hotel?
A: Women bring a finer attention to detail and a nurturing quality that fosters better communication and employee engagement. These attributes are invaluable in hospitality, where guest satisfaction and team cohesion are paramount.
Q: What recommendations would you give to junior female hospitality employees on breaking through industry ceilings?
A: Always challenge yourself and embrace change, even when it’s daunting. The rewards are immense. Never stop growing and seeking new opportunities for development.
Q: What can hospitality businesses do to empower more female employees and assist them in reaching their full potential in the industry?
A: Businesses can empower women by providing more opportunities for skill development and personal growth. Professional development for women is made possible through creating an authentically supportive environment and offering diverse resources.
