A distinctive city skyline, a vibrant atmosphere, plenty of diversity and strong financial drive set Johannesburg apart as one of Africa’s most appealing cities. The metropolis has also become known as Joburg, Jozi and eGoli, the latter meaning “Place of Gold” in Zulu.
It grew rapidly from a settlement to a large city when the Gold Rush hit the region in the 1880s and, although it has gone through much evolution over the years, remains a powerful economic hub today. It is now South Africa’s largest city and one of the 50 largest urban areas in the world.
Johannesburg is the primary point of entry for internationals arriving in South Africa and thus the city welcomes a multitude of travellers from abroad each year.
It offers much in the way of opportunities and experiences to residents and visitors – business and leisure – alike. Johannesburg has more than one central business district, including Sandton, Rosebank and Roodepoort, to name a few.
Despite parts of the city being characterised by their high-rise buildings, Johannesburg is in fact one of the greenest cities in the world, with over six-million trees, multiple nature reserves, a number of bird sanctuaries and botanical gardens.
