Motswari Private Game Reserve Menu

An African dream beckons – one that is defined by extraordinary scenery, an authentic atmosphere and warm hospitality. This is Motswari Private Game Reserve, a family-owned and operated luxury safari lodge. Here, majestic creatures, including the Big Five, offer incredible viewing opportunities as they bask in their natural habitat. Motswari means “to conserve and protect” in Tswana and that is what the reserve aims to do.

Motswari Private Game Reserve, located within the Timbavati and Umbabat Private Nature Reserve, stretches out over 150 square kilometres. It has been in existence for over four decades and its friendly staff members are intrinsic to its success. Great emphasis is placed on personal attention, ensuring that each guest instantly feels at home in this stunning setting. Artworks by owner, Marion Geiger-Orengo, additionally bring the lodge to life and add to its visual appeal.

Guests arrive as visitors and leave as friends.

About the Timbavati and Umbabat Private Nature Reserve

The breathtaking Timbavati and Umbabat Private Nature Reserve is located in a conservation area, known as the Greater Kruger Park that stretches from Mpumalanga into the Limpopo province of South Africa. The Timbavati and Umbabat Private Nature Reserve shares an unfenced border with the Kruger National Park, which allows animal species to move freely between these expansive parks. Guests can therefore look forward to exceptional game viewing moments.

The region is easily accessible by air or road and is a six- to seven-hour drive from Johannesburg. The climate in this area is subtropical and rains fall during summer. The warmer months of the year roll in from October to March, whereas winter is from April to September. Generally speaking, daytime temperatures are pleasant, but mornings and evenings can be cool.

Fantastic stay, with awesome viewings on almost all our game drives, and in particular, several stunning leopard sightings. Good service. Game vehicles in good condition. A wonderful family holiday to remember!

We couldn’t recommend Motswari more highly. Truly wonderful game drives - we were blessed to have Robynne as our guide and Lot as our tracker. Robynne was amazing, such great knowledge and enthusiasm, we loved every second, including a brilliant bush walk. One morning we woke to find lioness and cub tracks right outside our room door. All the team were friendly and helpful - nothing was too much trouble.

Not our first safari but definitely one of the best. Yes we saw the big five, including the elusive rhino and leopard, however the other things are what sets Motswari apart; knowledgeable guides (thanks Kevin and Eric) who are completely dedicated to finding the wildlife. Our group were impressed and possibly a bit worried that tracker Eric left the safety of the jeep several times to follow tracks on foot. The other important thing that Motswari offers is relative seclusion in the Timbavati, so when that Rhino was discovered there wasn’t 10 other jeeps descending at once. Each animal sighting was practically touching distance and absolutely awesome. The food isn’t gourmet but we didn’t come for fine dining; it is tasty and plentiful and the included cold beers are welcome after a hot game drive. Motswari is social at dinner and for us we lucked out with two great couples and guide Kevin where the conversation flowed. The glowing reviews for Motswari really are testament to this special place and the people running it.

A total of 15 en-suite bungalows have been interspersed in nature and make up the Main Camp. This reserve remains exclusive as it never hosts more than 30 guests at any given point in time. Each unit has been decorated in a traditional manner that alludes to its surroundings and maintains a luxurious feel.
